What to Wear for Your Session
Start with a Color Palette
As a Lake Tahoe family photographer, I have learned a thing or two about what looks best on camera! I recommend picking 3-4 colors to use as your starting point. Think in terms of earthy, neutral, or natural tones that complement the Tahoe landscape—blues, greens, creams, and tans work beautifully here. Everyone can express their own sense of style within that color scheme, tying the group together without looking like a uniform.
Mix Patterns & Solids
Your colors don't need to be exact matches; in fact, it looks better if they aren't! Mixing solid blocks of color with patterns adds interest and helps break away from the "matchy-matchy" look. If you have more than one person wearing patterns, try to choose prints that are different in size or style so they don't compete.
Dress for Comfort & Location
What is your go-to outfit that you love and feel comfortable in? That might be the perfect piece to start with. Pick clothes that let you run, play, and be carefree. If you love wearing jeans, look no further! Since we will likely be on a beach or a trail, I recommend comfortable shoes (or even going barefoot in the sand) rather than high heels.
Consider Your Home Decor
Think about where you will hang these photos. You want to make sure the colors of your clothing will fit nicely with the colors in your living room or hallway, especially if you are planning a large canvas print. If you aren't sure if your outfits work together, try laying all the clothes out on your bed to see how they sit next to each other. This usually helps spot anything that might need rethinking.
Traveling Light? No Problem
If you are visiting Lake Tahoe for a vacation, chances are you haven't packed your whole wardrobe, so your choices might be limited. That is completely okay! Wear what you have and bring a relaxed, open attitude to the shoot. The best photos come from you feeling comfortable, not from having the "perfect" outfit. Focus on having fun and enjoying this moment in your life—your smiles will matter far more than your clothes!
Relax & Have Fun!
The first few moments of a session might feel a little awkward, but that is normal! My goal is to keep things low-key and easy-going. Focus on having fun and enjoying this moment with your family. Your shoot should be a reflection of who you are, so remember to wear what makes you feel good and happy. Lake Tahoe family sessions are full of sun and color—let's photograph you having fun doing it.
