Family photos are always at their best when children feel relaxed, comfortable, and free to be themselves. During this Lake Tahoe family photography session, I focused on engaging with the kids, making them laugh, and giving them the space to come out of their shells naturally.

Rather than asking them to hold stiff poses or smile on command, I kept the session playful and easygoing. We talked, explored, moved around, and allowed their real personalities to show. Those in-between moments—the genuine smiles, curious expressions, and spontaneous reactions—often become the most meaningful photographs.

I also photographed the family in several different spots within the same location. This creates more variety without requiring the family to travel from place to place. As the light changed, we moved between open areas, shaded trees, rustic fences, and scenic viewpoints, always looking for the most flattering light.

Lake Tahoe offers such a beautiful setting for family portraits, and I love incorporating the landscape into the photographs whenever possible. The trees, mountain light, natural textures, and iconic Lake Tahoe views help create images that feel connected to the place while still keeping the family as the main focus.

My goal is to make every family session feel less like a formal photo shoot and more like an enjoyable experience together. When children are allowed to relax and have fun, their personalities shine through—and the photographs feel genuine, joyful, and completely their own.
